Chronology of the Faculty of Psychology
Research and education in psychology at Doshisha University continues evolving, building on its 89 years’ history.
In April 2009, the Faculty of Psychology was established as the 12th undergraduate faculty of Doshisha University. The university has a long history in psychological study, which dates to 1927 when the research and education in experimental psychology started in earnest.
The Faculty of Psychology will expand its research and educational activities into new fields and address the needs of globalization with eyes fixed on the next generation, while remaining faithful to its long-held tradition and founding spirit.
| 1875 |
Psychology was taught at Doshisha Academy upon its foundation by Joseph Hardy Neesima.
The history of research and education in psychology at Doshisha University originates in Doshisha Academy, the precursor of Doshisha University. In 1875, the founder, Joseph Hardy Neesima submitted an application for approval to establish a private academy to the Kyoto prefectural government, in which psychology was listed as one of the disciplines to be taughtat the new school. Yujiro Motora, the first professor of psychology at Tokyo Imperial University known as the founder of modern psychology in Japan, and Matataro Matsumoto, the first professor of psychology at Kyoto Imperial University, studied at Doshisha Academy in the early days of its establishment.

| 1927 | The Japanese history and tradition of research and education in experimental psychology started at Doshisha. In 1927, Psychology Course was introduced to the Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Letters at Doshisha University, which marked the beginning of the proud tradition of the university’s psychology laboratory that now boasts a major presence in the field of experimental psychology. The founder of the psychology laboratory is Yahe-e Motomiya, one of the first professors of psychology at Doshisha University, who, after studying medicine at the Tokyo Jikei Hospital Medical School and theology at Doshisha Seminary, completed courses in experimental psychology at Oberlin College and then at Yale University. |
| 1948 | With the start of Doshisha University under the new educational system, the Psychology Course was reorganized as the Education and Psychology Course in the Department of Culture at the Faculty of Letters, in which Professor Okichi Endo and Professor Yoshinori Mastuyama demonstrated leadership in guiding the university to conduct new psychological research and education to better meet the needs of the coming age. |
| 1961 | Master’s program in psychology was established in the Graduate School of Letters. |
| 1964 | Doctoral program in psychology was established in the Graduate School of Letters. |
| 1967 | The Education and Psychology Course in the Department of Culture at the Faculty of Letter was divided into the Education Course and Psychology Course. |
| 1986 | With the opening of the Tanabe Campus, Kyotanabe Psychology Laboratory was established. |
| 2005 | Following the reorganization of the Faculty of Letters, the Department of Psychology was established, along with the Center for Research in Human Development and the Center for Studies on Emotions, Stress, and Health. |
| 2007 | The Department of Psychology was selected as a grant recipient under the Support Program for Improving Graduate School Education funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. |
| 2008 | The Center for Baby Science was established.※This center is now integrated into the Organization for Research Initiatives and Development. |

The Faculty of Psychology and the Graduate School of Psychology were established.
The Faculty of Psychology and the Graduate School of Psychology were newly established in 2009 as world-class research and educational institutions to pursue the two core educational goals; “to shed light on the basic nature of the human mind and behavior and identify emotional and behavioral patterns through experiments and investigations” and “to engage in clinical and applied research on the human mind and behavior and put research findings into practice,” thereby producing high-caliber professionals with a global and future-oriented mindset and conscientious skills.

Center for Clinical Psychology was established in the Keishikan building in the Imadegawa Campus.
※This center has been relocated in the Jinshinkan building in the Shinmachi Campus in 2019.

| 2011 | A two-course program, consisting of the “Psychology Course” and the “Clinical Psychology Course,” was launched at the Graduate School of Psychology. |
| 2012 | The Clinical Psychology Course in the Department of Psychology at the Graduate School of Psychology was granted the “Class 1 Graduate School” status by the Foundation of the Japanese Certification Board for Clinical Psychologists. |
| 2013 | Center for Wing of Empirically Supported Treatment was established. |
| 2014 | Research Center for Psychological Science was established. |
| 2018 | A curriculum for "Certified Public Psychologists" has been implemented. |
